Spiritual communities often say that you already are the best version of yourself, and that everything you need is already inside you.
I used to take statements like this as metaphor—poetic language meant to gesture toward self-worth, or some kind of inherent wholeness beneath the surface of who we are in daily life. But the longer I’ve paid attention to how people actually function under different conditions, the harder it has become to keep treating that idea as purely symbolic.
Something about it feels more literal than we tend to allow.
The issue, at least as I have come to understand it, is not whether those capacities exist. The issue is access.
And access is not a fixed state.
It shifts.
Sometimes dramatically.
Sometimes, without us noticing at all.
One of the things that has fascinated me for years is how dramatically people can change under different conditions. Not only in obvious ways, like becoming more irritable when stressed or more relaxed after rest, but in a deeper sense: entire ranges of cognitive and emotional capacity seem to become available or unavailable depending on the state of the system as a whole.
A person who has been overwhelmed for months may suddenly demonstrate remarkable creativity in a brief window of calm. Someone caught in a cycle of anxiety may have a moment of unusual clarity or perspective. An exhausted parent may find reserves of patience that did not seem available the day before. A person who has appeared defensive, rigid, or emotionally distant may suddenly become playful, open, and deeply present.
What stands out in these moments is that they rarely feel like something new appearing. More often, they feel like something returning. Both the person experiencing it and the people around them often recognize it immediately, as though a familiar version of the person has become accessible again.
There is often a sense of remembering rather than becoming.
The longer I have observed this pattern, the more difficult it has become to maintain the assumption that behavior is a stable expression of identity. We tend to speak as though people simply are certain things—patient, anxious, creative, selfish, generous, resilient—as if these qualities are fixed traits rather than states that fluctuate within a much larger range of possibility.
Yet lived experience suggests something more complex.
Human beings appear to possess a remarkable degree of variability that is often hidden by the stability of their environments. The same person can appear almost unrecognizable depending on whether their system is operating from a sense of relative safety or from a sense of threat.
And this is where the question of “access” becomes central.
Modern life rarely presents a single, obvious form of danger. Instead, many people live under persistent, low-grade pressure: financial uncertainty, relational strain, social comparison, overstimulation, unresolved emotional history, and environments that require ongoing self-regulation without sufficient recovery. These conditions do not always register as crisis, but they still accumulate in the body and shape its baseline state.
Stress is not only emotional. It is physiological reorganization.
It changes attention, cognition, memory, emotional regulation, and perception. It changes what the nervous system treats as relevant.
At a basic level, the nervous system is not simply reacting to the world in real time. It is continuously predicting what is happening, filtering perception through those predictions, and updating its model based on feedback. What we experience as reality is, in large part, this predictive system in motion—an ongoing attempt to reduce uncertainty using prior experience, sensory input, and current physiological state.
Under conditions of threat—whether physical, psychological, or social—the system does not simply “feel stressed.” It reorganizes itself around survival.
Attention narrows toward what appears immediately relevant. The body shifts resources toward protection and readiness. Cognitive flexibility decreases. The system begins to favor predictions that resolve uncertainty quickly, even when they reduce complexity or accuracy.
In the metaphor of being chased by a bear, this narrowing is adaptive. If a bear is present, it is useful for the system to ignore everything that does not contribute to survival. In that moment, blue flowers in your perception, long-term implications, or abstract possibilities are not relevant—they are noise.
The complication is that these same mechanisms can persist long after the original threat has passed, or in situations where there is no single clear threat—only a diffuse, ongoing sense of pressure.
Over time, the nervous system learns what to prioritize through repetition.
And this is where common assumptions about change begin to break down.
We often assume that insight should be enough to transform behavior, as though understanding a pattern should automatically allow someone to step outside of it. But understanding something intellectually is only one layer of the system. It does not immediately reorganize attention, physiology, or prediction.
A person can know they are safe and still not feel safe.
A person can recognize a pattern and still remain inside it.
This is not a failure of willpower. It is a reflection of how deeply state-dependent cognition is.
When the body is chronically activated, the brain becomes more efficient at detecting threat and more conservative about integrating contradictory information. The system becomes better at finding “bears,” even when bears are no longer present.
From the inside, this often feels entirely rational. The nervous system is not malfunctioning. It is optimizing for efficiency within a model that has been repeatedly reinforced.
But coherence is not the same as accuracy.
A system can be internally consistent and still misaligned with present reality.
Which is why change is rarely a matter of simply introducing new information. It is a matter of changing the conditions under which new information is allowed to matter.
And those conditions are not purely cognitive. They are physiological, relational, and environmental.
Attention has to shift.
The body has to experience repeated signals of safety.
The mind has to encounter enough contradiction to loosen its predictions.
And the surrounding environment has to support a different pattern long enough for it to stabilize.
Without those conditions, the older model remains the most reliable interpretation available—not because it is true, but because it is the one most consistently reinforced.
Which raises a quieter question underneath all of this.
If access to ourselves depends on state, and state depends on both internal and external conditions, then “becoming” may not be about constructing something new at all. It may be about the conditions that determine how much of what already exists can be held at once.
And if that is true, then the implications extend beyond the individual.
Because it suggests something we rarely account for in how we design environments, relationships, or systems: that behavior is not simply an expression of character, but an expression of conditions interacting with a nervous system trying to maintain coherence under pressure.
People are not fixed identities acting in isolation. They are dynamic configurations of experience, physiology, learning history, and relational context, shifting depending on what the system is asked to carry.
This does not erase harm. It does not remove responsibility. It does not imply that all behavior is excusable. But it does complicate the assumption that what we see is the whole of what someone is.
It also complicates how we think about change itself.
Because if people are frequently operating from narrowed states of access—states shaped by chronic stress, unresolved trauma, environmental instability, and reinforced prediction loops—then change is not only an individual process. It is also dependent on whether the conditions around a person allow their system to stabilize long enough for new information to take hold.
This is where the conversation stops being psychological and becomes structural.
We tend to treat regulation, resilience, and flexibility as individual responsibilities. But they are also ecological outcomes—emergent properties of environments that either support or restrict access to a wider range of internal states.
And if that is true, then a different set of questions begins to matter.
Not only: how do people heal?
But: what would it mean to build systems that assume people are constantly moving in and out of access to themselves—and treat stabilization as something worth designing for?
What would education look like if nervous system state were treated as a prerequisite for learning, not an afterthought?
What would workplaces look like if chronic activation were understood as something that narrows cognition, reduces flexibility, and limits creativity over time?
What would relationships look like if attunement were treated not as emotional luxury, but as a practical support for access to clarity?
These are not abstract questions. They are design questions.
Because once you see people this way, it becomes harder to locate the problem purely inside the individual, and harder to ignore the environments that continuously shape what a person can or cannot reach within themselves.
This does not mean people are never responsible for what they do. It means responsibility exists inside a system that either expands or constrains what is available to be chosen.
And perhaps that is the more useful lens.
Not because it makes things simpler, but because it makes the actual problem visible.
The question is no longer whether people should try harder to become different versions of themselves.
The question becomes whether the conditions we collectively build make it more or less likely that people can stay in contact with the parts of themselves that are already capable of clarity, flexibility, and care.
